(Brownsville, Texas)-Brownsville Porter head football coach, Carlos Uresti was pleased with his team’s win over Grulla High School 30-2, on Thursday night at Sams Stadium. “We still have a lot of work to do,’ says Uresti. “It was a great win tonight.” The Cowboys will now get ready for another Thursday night game next week as they kickoff District 16-5A Division I against Brownsville Veterans Memorial.
The Cowboys took their opening drive all the way to the Grulla Gators five-yard line but two penalties cost the Cowboys 20-yards and the Gators would hold. The Gators showed promise and managed to get the ball inside the Cowboys 30-yard line but they would cough it up and Porter would take over.
Cowboys starting quarterback Kyle Aguirre led his team to the five-yard again and this time, he would score to put the Boys up 6-0 after a blocked extra point attempt. A few plays later, the Cowboys blocked the Gators on a punt and DB Chris Ortiz picked up the pigskin and rambled into the end zone for another six points right before the half to make it 12-0.
In the second half, the Porter defense just kept coming with senior LB Arath De La Torre, who already recorded three quarterback sacks in the first half. Porter QB Aquirre spotted Adolfo Gonzalez for a 29-yard touchdown pass to put the Cowboys up for good. (HSSMImages/RickiEscobedo)
