(Mercedes, Tx)-Varsity Cheerleading teams from across the Rio Grande Valley participated in the annual High School Sports Magazine’s Football Photoday held at stadiums throughout the Valley. “This is awesome,” said Edinburg High School varsity cheerleader Rebecca Velazquez. “We thank High School Sports Magazine for including cheerleaders in this year’s preview. Football Friday nights is a bunch of fun and spirit.” Cheerleaders do more than just show their support during football game nights. They train to compete in events like the University Interscholastic League’s Spirit State Championships held in Fort Worth, Texas at the Fort Worth Convention Center. This season’s competition will be held on January 13-15, 2022.
Other varsity cheerleading teams, like Edinburg High School choose to compete at UCA National High School Cheerleading Championships, going head-to-head against varsity teams from across the United States. The Lady Bobcats have won seven straight national titles. Teams compete in various categories to earn national awards. The event is held annually at the Walt Disney World Resort on Orlando, Florida. Cheerleading teams from Brownsville ISD, together with their football players, took photos individually
and even had groups pictures with the football team at Sams Stadium. “This is exciting to see our varsity cheerleaders and football teams together,” said Brownsville ISD Athletic Director, Gilbert Leal. At Mercedes Tigers Stadium, the Mercedes Cheerleaders all dressed up in their game uniforms and brought their mascot, Stripes to take part with the event. Teams traveled from as far as Rio Grande City, Raymondville, Port Isabel, Los Fresnos, Donna, Mission Veterans, Edinburg, to attend the 2021 HSSM Football Photoday.
